Sales is a tough, yet, rewarding profession. There are tips, tricks and tactics that sales professionals must use to get ahead.

However, it’s important to brush up on your game once in a while and learn new techniques – even if you’re a sales professional and been in the industry for years. See tips to help you sell more efficiently and close the deal faster.

Prepare

You must prepare to become a success. Make sure you have the background and confidence to approach a situation before diving into it. Learn everything you can about selling and practice every chance you get. The more prepared you are, the better chance you have at making a sale. It’s really easy for a customer to know when someone isn’t organized, and they’ll be turning away very quickly.

Find Commonality

It’s easier to sell to someone who’s like you. This is simply a fact. Find common ground with those you plan to sell to and put the others aside for the moment. People are more likely to buy from someone who’s similar to themselves. Find customers who have certain hobbies or who you know are interested in your product.

Create an Elevator Speech

Work on an elevator speech for when you encounter a sales opportunity. This is your short pitch that you memorize, which covers all the main points. Practice it over and over again until you can recite it in your sleep. An elevator speech should include persuasive messaging that your customer will quickly pick up on and relate to on the fly.

Sell on the Spot

Come prepared to your face-to-face meetings assuming you’ll be making a sale. Bring a receipt book and document the purchases; give a copy of the order form to your customer and keep a copy for yourself. Show up with any products if necessary too. Always be ready and confident that you’ll be making a sale when you talk to customers. Bring marketing collateral to help answer any questions your customer has while you’re talking.

Remember Names

Always remember customer’s names when you see them. Do whatever you have to do to recall them at a later date. Write them down as soon as you meet a person and come up with an acronym for remembering their name. People are flattered when you call them by name, especially if you haven’t seen them in a while or only met them once. This is really important to do when you’re in sales. It shows you care about the customer as a person and genuinely enjoy connecting with them.

Upsell & Cross Sell

Know when to upsell and cross-sell during a conversation. If a customer is truly taking to what you’re saying and expressing additional needs with you, take advantage and let them know what else you have to offer. This way you have the opportunity to sell more, while meeting with them less. This frees up more time for you to find new customers.

Conclusion

Sales is a challenging position. It takes talent, strategy and technique to succeed. If you do it right the first time, then you’ll open yourself up to gaining new clients faster. Use these tips to help you sell more efficiently and close more deals.
